Intrada 2027–2028: a European development programme for young early music instrumentalists

Applications are now open for the 2027–2028 edition of Intrada, a Europe-wide artist development scheme supporting young orchestral instrumentalists specialising in historically informed performance. Led by five partner ensembles, the programme combines professional performance opportunities, individual mentoring and career development to help emerging musicians take their next steps in the early music sector.

Intrada brings together B’Rock Orchestra, Concerto Copenhagen, Dunedin Consort, Le Banquet Céleste and Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. Through this collaboration, selected musicians will gain first-hand experience of professional orchestral work while receiving guidance from established performers and music directors.

Over the course of the year-long programme, participants will be offered the opportunity to perform in at least one project with a partner ensemble, alongside individual lessons and mentoring with an instrumentalist from one of the organisations. The programme also includes professional development sessions addressing the practical realities of a musical career, from managing a small ensemble and developing marketing and social media strategies to fundraising, administration, and preparing CVs, biographies and auditions.

All rehearsals and performances are paid, and travel and accommodation costs are covered for programme activities. Finalists invited to the in-person auditions will also receive support with travel and accommodation where necessary.
The 2027–2028 edition is open to string players under the age of 35 on 1 January 2027 who play historically set-up instruments and are based in Europe, including countries outside the European Union, with the right to work in the EU. Eligible instruments are violin, viola, cello and double bass.

The application process begins with an online form and a video recording featuring two required orchestral excerpts and two contrasting movements from different works, one of which must be by Bach or Handel. Applications will be assessed blindly, with recordings evaluated on technique, musical expression, historical and stylistic awareness, and interpretation. Nine candidates will be invited to audition in person at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam on 23 January 2027. Each applicant will receive feedback on their application.
