SHIFT Culture: 17 cultural networks certified as eco-responsible
For the third consecutive year, participating networks, including REMA, have implemented the eco-guidelines developed as part of the SHIFT Culture project and all 17 participating networks have obtained certification. Designed by and for network organisations, which are often small but have a significant impact (particularly in terms of travel), these guidelines now provide a structured framework for accelerating the ecological transition of the European cultural sector.
Each network applied the mandatory criteria as well as a selection of optional criteria, participated in peer cross-audits and took part in a joint online development workshop. In the first and second years, the networks also benefit from an external audit conducted by Vector42; the intermediate years are devoted to self-assessment and peer auditing. This model places collective responsibility and shared leadership at the heart of the system, while strengthening links between networks to encourage more ambitious actions.
The autumn 2025 workshop provided an opportunity to share best practices developed within the SHIFT Culture community and finalise the revision of the eco-guidelines, which will come into force in 2026.
As the pilot project comes to an end, 2026 will be a year of transition. Culture for Climate Scotland, which supported the co-creation of the guidelines and then coordinated the eco-certification programme for three years, will hand over to a new organisation from 2027.

We warmly congratulate the entire SHIFT Culture community for these three years of exemplary commitment to more sustainable practices in European cultural work.
