CD Release: Jean-Baptiste Barriere: Sonates pour Le Pardessus de Viole (Paris ca. 1740)
Before the revolution the smallest member of the Viola da gamba family, the Pardessus de Viole, was a veritable instrument of fashion in France. Not only young noble ladies from the upcoming bourgeoisie found it thrilling, but even the princesses Sophie and Victoire, daughters of King Louis XV., were keen on it. Also, professional virtuosos like Jean-Barrière performed, taught and composed for it. His Livre V. Sonates pour le Pardessus de Viole is the most impressive example for its virtuosic and elegant repertoire which has enchanted the salons in Paris for nearly 100 years.
