Open letter calling for ethical digital practices in the cultural sector

REMA has joined a broad coalition of European cultural networks and projects in co-signing an open letter initiated by Arty Farty, addressed to the European Commission and the Creative Europe programme. The letter urges immediate action in response to the growing power of digital giants and the ethical concerns surrounding their platforms.
The letter highlights serious issues including the dismantling of content moderation, the abandonment of diversity and inclusion policies, and questionable data privacy practices, all of which threaten independence, pluralism, and human rights in the cultural and media sectors.
The signatories call for:
- A new ethical digital criteria in upcoming Creative Europe calls for proposals;
- Recognition and extra evaluation points for projects using open-source, independent, and European digital tools;
- Proactive support for fairer digital practices, aligned with European values of diversity, sustainability, and freedom of expression.
This call to action is part of a broader vision for a more ethical and independent European digital ecosystem, supported by existing initiatives like the Fediverse, NL Net Foundation, and the European Alternatives platform.
