Le Sommeil - Poland
Le Sommeil is an award-winning early music ensemble and interdisciplinary art project founded and curated by mezzo-soprano and cultural theorist Margarita Slepakova, together with a group of outstanding young soloists and graduates of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, one of Europe’s leading academies of early music. Founded in 2019 in Basel, Le Sommeil is now a legal entity in Warsaw, Poland, and also operates as a foundation (Verein) in Bättwil, Switzerland.
Le Sommeil explores the relationship between myth, dream, and archetype through the medium of Baroque music, inspired by Jungian thought, comparative mythology, and literature. Its projects aim to reveal the psychological and poetic depth of early repertoire while engaging modern audiences through interdisciplinary performance formats that combine music, scenography, lighting, text, and fragrance.
Le Sommeil’s mission is to redefine early music as a living artistic language — one capable of expressing the mythic and emotional layers of human experience. The ensemble sees its work not merely as the preservation of historical repertoire, but as a form of artistic research and dialogue across time, disciplines, and cultures.
By integrating performance, academic reflection, and visual art, Le Sommeil creates immersive experiences that speak to audiences on both aesthetic and psychological levels. The group’s performances often take place in non-traditional spaces, museums, and hybrid art venues, fostering encounters between early music and contemporary art audiences.
