Bach in all its states - Concertos for 2, 3 and 4 harpsichords
France
The Caravanserai celebrates its 10th anniversary!
Since 2020, the Caravanserai has given a wide audience the chance to hear Johann Sebastian Bach's concerti for 3 and 4 harpsichords in concert. These pieces, rarely performed for purely logistical reasons (bringing together and tuning 4 harpsichords!), illustrate the art of writing for keyboard and strings, of which the composer was a precursor, as well as his unique art of musical conversation.
The opportunity to perform concertos for more than one harpsichord presented itself to Bach in 1729, when he became director of the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig. With this ensemble made up of university students, his sons and his pupils, he performed the Brandenburg Concertos and his orchestral suites in cafés and adjoining gardens, as well as harpsichord concertos.
The virtuoso harpsichordists and the chamber ensemble Le Caravansérail have brought these lively pieces to life here.
To round off the programme, Bertrand Cuiller will perform a previously unpublished transcription of the 3rd Brandenburg Concerto for four harpsichords.
