Zamus: early music festival I Sieben letzte Worte | Ludus Instrumentalis, Andreas Staier

21 May/20h30 Germany / Alte Feuerwache, Melchiorstraße 3, 50670, Cologne

String quartet and fortepiano in exchange

How do you set a person's last words to music? Joseph Haydn was entrusted with this task as early as 1787. On Good Friday in the Spanish port city of Cádiz, he was commissioned to compose seven adagios that would emotionally move the listener and underscore the words of the dying Jesus. Haydn's challenge: to create seven coherent, calm pieces that do not tire, but emphasize the meaning of Jesus' words.

Andreas Staier and the Ludus Instrumentalis ensemble will now take on this task and perform Haydn's masterpiece in their own unique way - on the fortepiano and with a string quartet.

The concert will be recorded by Deutschlandfunk.

On the same evening, the Ensemble Marsyas Baroque and Martí Corbera will also perform “La vida es sueño” at 19:00-20:00 in the Alte Feuerwache. Combined tickets for both events can be purchased via eventbrite.de.
