YMS 2025 National Academy Finale
From 04 October to 04 October Australia / Adelaide
A brilliant finale concert by the Young Mannheim Symphonists 2025 National Academy
Experience dramatic Mendelssohn and passionate Schubert, played by Australia’s most brilliant young musicians in the glorious acoustics of Elder Conservatorium Hall, Adelaide!
Come and hear the finale concert of the Young Mannheim Symphonists 2025 National Academy, Australia’s national HIP youth orchestra, conducted from the violin by Rachael Beesley.
For one week beginning 29 September, musicians up to age 23 will come from all corners of the country to dive into Schubert's 'Tragic' Symphony No.4 and Mendelssohn's dramatic Symphony No.3 'Scottish', discovering how Historically Informed Performance (HIP) brings music to life. They'll try gut strings, natural brass, historic winds and timpani, side-by-side with ARCO's own world-class musicians.
Launched in 2014, the Young Mannheim Symphonists (YMS) is an annual youth orchestral training program for student musicians aged 23 and under from all over Australia and New Zealand. There are three programs throughout the year, and over the course of each week, participants engage in intensive workshops and rehearsals that explore the theoretical and practical foundations of historically informed performance. They work side-by-side with specialist musicians from the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra, with each Academy culminating in a public performance of the repertoire studied.
The Young Mannheim Symphonists faculty comprises members of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra, whose deep knowledge of musical styles, articulations, and embellishments is grounded in years of performance experience, scholarly study of treatises and scores, and hands-on experimentation with instruments and interpretation. They are passionate about understanding music within its historical context and are dedicated to sharing this insight with the next generation of musicians.
