Voices of Time with Emma Kirkby & Marc Mauillo

12 October Denmark / Hillerød

Experience some of the greatest voices in the world of Baroque music; Emma Kirkby and Marc Mauillon in musical dialog with Concerto Copenhagen and new works by composer Signe Lykke, a voice of our time.

The concert takes place on October 12 in one of the country's most beautiful baroque churches; Frederiksborg Castle Church. With gilded angels and virtuoso wood carvings, the castle church is the ideal setting for the concert. Concerto Copenhagen is one of the ensembles that specializes in performing music with knowledge of historical instruments and approaches to music. When they put the bow to the string, the music sounds of eternity and the present at the same time.

The meeting of baroque and contemporary
The concert program presents works from the early Baroque and newly composed works from our time. Composer Signe Lykke has written music especially for the concert's soloists: a work for Emma Kirkby accompanied by Lars Ulrik Mortensen on clavichord, and a work for Marc Mauillon and castle organist Allan Rasmussen at the church's historic Compenius organ. In addition, MON can experience Emma Kirkby in music by Byrd and Buxtehude, and Marc Mauillon in French airs de cour together with Concerto Copenhagen musicians and Lars Ulrik Mortensen.
The present in eternity
Music is the art form that can give us a sense of eternity and at the same time only takes place in the present. When we enter a historic space like the castle church in Hillerød, we can step on the same stones and see the same gold decorations as MON has done for hundreds of years. But the music - whether from the Baroque period or today - will always be brought to life anew when it is played. That's what makes musical experiences so special.

Collaboration with Signe Lykke
In the coming years, Signe Lykke will compose a series of short works that explore the diversity of the human voice through a range of gender, age and timbre. Each work also lets the listener get up close to Concerto Copenhagen's musicians as the singers' voices are accompanied by lute, clavichord, violins, organ and more. The collaboration between CoCo and Signe Lykke is based on a creative process where composer, singers and musicians explore the playful approaches of Baroque music in modern tonal language. Signe Lykke's works are primarily created for digital release, but the first two works can be experienced at the concert in Frederiksborg Castle Church in October.
