Tears of Sorrow and Joy
Who doesn't know the famous song ‘There's Always the Sun’ by British rock band The Stranglers, which deals with the important questions of life? Aren't we all looking for someone we can confide in? Someone we can reveal ourselves to, find comfort with and share our joy with? Music has always served as a voice and comforter for people. In the Middle Ages, saints and martyrs were regarded as mediators between God and man – as those to whom one could confide all one's worries. Numerous songs are dedicated to them and embody people's longings and prayers. Places of pilgrimage were seen as bridges between heaven and earth. But medieval love songs also helped those who were head over heels in love to survive their emotional turmoil.
