CD release - London circa 1760

22 August France / Paris

London circa 1760 is the fourth and final instalment in a series of four programmes on the history of instrumental music in England from the late 17th to the late 18th century, the fruit of extensive research.

Upon the death of his father Johann Sebastian, Johann Christian Bach left Germany and settled permanently in England as a musician for Queen Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III.

There he met Karl Friedrich Abel, one of the last great virtuosos of the viola da gamba, and the two friends went on to play an important role in London's musical life by founding the Bach-Abel Concerts in 1765. This programme highlights a little-known repertoire, focusing on the fashion for pre-classical German music in London during the reign of King George III of Hanover.
Music by JC. Bach (1735-1782), C.F. Abel (1723-1787), Lord Erskine (1750-1823), F. Geminiani (1687-1762)

  • Serge Saitta, traverso
  • Stéphane Dudermel, violin
  • Florence Bolton, viola da gamba
