The complete performance of this masterpiece from the early seventeenth century is a unique opportunity to capture a crucial moment in the history of music. It represents a bridge between Renaissance polyphony and the more intense expressiveness of the Baroque. Monteverdi is the genius capable of changing Western music forever and here he brings the union between text and music to its peak, making every word, every emotion, an unforgettable auditory experience. At the centre of the programme we find two pillars of shocking expressive tension: the very famous Lamento d’Arianna, and the Sestina: Lacrime d’Amante al sepolcro dell’Amata, a funerary monument of touching resignation. The picture is completed by other madrigals that explore a wide range of affections, testifying to a profound movement that was about to undermine the genre, marking a sunset and at the same time the dawn of a new life.
