On 4 October, the feast of St Francis of Assisi (c. 1181–1226) is celebrated, a figure revered not only by Catholics but also by Protestants, Orthodox Christians and even non-Christians. This concert/CD programme aims to take a musical journey through the legends, stories and spirit of Francis, using pieces from the 13th and 14th centuries associated with him and the Order of Friars Minor. Founded in 1209, the order was characterised by its radical fidelity to the Gospel and absolute poverty. In addition to their spiritual mission, the Franciscans made an important contribution to medieval music theory and practice with treatises, spiritual hymns and songs in the vernacular that reached a wide audience.
