During the Siglo de Oro, the Empire of Charles V became the crossroads where the Flemish tradition merged with Hispanic sensitivity. The program illustrates the Renaissance practice of transforming famous European vocal pieces — such as the chansons of Sandrin and Gombert or Arcadelt's madrigal — into sophisticated instrumental architectures through the art of the glosa, the florid variation theorized by Diego Ortiz and Antonio de Cabezón. Between dances, romances, and improvisations on the harpsichord, viola da gamba, and flute, the concert moves on the tones of a very sweet amorous melancholy. The journey culminates in Mille Regretz by Josquin Desprez, the Emperor's favorite piece, tabulated by Luis de Narváez as La Canción del Emperador.
