The Myth of Ariadne – universal in its interplay of love, oppression, political cunning, salvation, and the alternation between deceptive joy and sorrow – has repeatedly inspired musicians in some of their finest creations, from Claudio Monteverdi to Richard Strauss.
The programme revolves around the myth of Ariadne in the 18th century, following a double thread: an artistic one, retracing the narrative transformations of the character, and a geographical one, travelling through Europe’s major musical capitals, from London to Vienna, via Naples and Dresden.
