Monteverdi, L'Orfeo
From 26 March to 26 March Italy / Pavia
L'Orfeo is a triumph of music, poetry and invention like few others in history. The relationship between poetic word and music is close to perfection. Every nuance of the text, both from a structural point of view and meaning is dressed musically. The chorus plays an essential role in presenting and commenting on the scenes sung by the characters. L'Orfeo, as often in Monteverdi, is a very prescriptive score: "recitar cantando" is translated into a very varied and complex rhythmic notation, in order to simulate the irregularity of speech, while the instrumentation is extremely precise and rich in meaning. From this fairy tale in music descends everything we today call opera.
