The great season of the Bolognese school of the late seventeenth century comes to life again in the comparison between the master Giovanni Paolo Colonna and his promising pupil Giovanni Bononcini. The center of musical life of the time, the Basilica of San Petronio was the laboratory where a majestic liturgical writing was consolidated. Colonna's eight-voice Magnificat, taken from the Second Book of Short Psalms of 1686, constitutes a mature essay on the polychoral style: the two conversing choirs create a solemn and balanced architecture between imitative rigor and declamation of the text. The Messa terza a cappella from Op. VII by the Modenese Giovanni Bononcini, published in 1688, is grafted onto this illustrious tradition, showing the perfect assimilation of the master's lesson combined with a renewed melodic sensitivity. The performance is entrusted to the Accademia d'Arcadia with the participation of the two organists Michele Vannelli and Sara Dieci, under the direction of Alessandra Rossi Lürig.
