Lucretia Borgia · Between History, Myth, and Legend

14 November Spain / VINARÒS

Carles Magraner
Capella de Ministrers

A musical tribute to Lucrezia Borgia (1480–1519), daughter of Pope Alexander VI — married three times, one husband assassinated, and an illegitimate son. All within just thirty-nine years and at the heart of the Renaissance.

This concert program is based on music from Lucrezia’s time and seeks to reveal her humanity. As Dario Fo suggests, it aims to free her from the cliché of the dissolute, incestuous woman and place her within the real historical and daily context of her era.

The audience is immersed in the fascinating world of the Italian Renaissance courts: her birth in Rome in 1480, the fall of Granada, her marriages to Giovanni Sforza, Alfonso d'Este, and Alfonso of Aragon, her relationships with Pietro Bembo and Isabella, life at the court of Ferrara, and the music of composers such as Bartolomeo Tromboncino and Joan Ambrosi Dalça. All of this leads to her eventual retreat into devotion and her death in 1519.
Elia Casanova, voice
Carles Magraner, viola da gamba
