In the 17th century, musical compositions depicting the Virgin Mary's grief flourished to an unprecedented extent as a result of the Counter-Reformation. The Counter-Reformation placed devotion to the figure of the Mater dolorosa at the heart of its theology, a theme that was to become a recurrent theme in Baroque art. At the same time, on the opera stage, Italian audiences were moved by the lamentations, the great scenes of lamentations that found a place of choice in operatic works.
The writing of these pages combines suffering with great gentleness and tender contemplation, playing on the typically Baroque affects so dear to the Italians.
