The Rhenish Chapel - "Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross"
France / Amilly
Saint-Martin Church / Sunday, April 27, 2025, 6:00 PM
Cast:
Hasnaa Bennani: soprano
Salomé Haller: mezzo-soprano
Benoît Haller: tenor
Pierre-Yves Cras: baritone
Guillaume Humbrecht: first violin
Koji Yoda: second violin
Satryo Aryobimo Yudomartono: viola
Jérôme Vidaller: cello
Rooted in the Baroque since its founding, the Rhenish Chapel waited until its coming of age to venture into the classical repertoire. The choice of a work dedicated to the trial and death of Jesus to initiate this new journey is no coincidence and aligns with the ongoing work of the Rhenish Chapel, which has grown and matured through its diligent focus on Bach’s Passions. Composed in 1786 for orchestra, the oratorio was quickly adapted for string quartet by Haydn himself, who continued to evolve his work in 1795, reviving it as an oratorio for choir, orchestra, and vocal soloists.
