Kyries Tenebrarum
08 June Italy / Naples
The Portuguese ensemble Arte Minima, conducted by Pedro Sousa Silva, will be making their debut in Naples with the Kyries Tenebrarum. This ancient polyphonic composition is associated with the Portuguese Royal Chapel and dates back to the early 16^(th) century. It is preserved today in the National Library in Naples. A tribute to the Portuguese musical and liturgical tradition of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, this piece was used during the Easter Triduum, particularly during the Office of Darkness, to reflect mourning and meditation on the Passion of Christ.
The piece alternates between Gregorian chants performed by the Schola Gregoriana della Pietà de' Turchini and polyphonic sections performed by the Arte Minima ensemble.
