Composed in 1640 by Claudio Monteverdi, Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria is an intense and captivating musical drama inspired by the final cantos of Homer’s Odyssey. After twenty years of war and adventure, Ulysses finally returns to Ithaca, only to find that his homeland has changed: Penelope, faithful yet tormented by uncertainty, is forced to fend off numerous suitors eager to usurp the throne. Only through his cunning and the aid of the gods can Ulysses reclaim his place and reveal his identity in one of the opera’s most poignant and theatrical scenes.
Davide Livermore’s direction merges the classical essence of the myth with an innovative aesthetic, crafting a visually stunning production that amplifies the emotional depth of the characters.
The conduction is entrusted to Michele Pasotti at the helm of his ensemble La Fonte Musica, winner of the Abbiati Prize in 2023 as best ensemble of the year.
