Il Pianto d'Orfeo

23 August/21h00 Switzerland / Aargau

With the birth of opera around 1600 in Florence, music history took a radical turn. Peri, Caccini, Monteverdi – they all turned to the figure of Orpheus, the best ambassador for the newly emerging style of recitar cantando. The story of the mythical singer who descends into the underworld to save his beloved Eurydice is the ultimate symbol of the power of music. For many, Monteverdi's “Orfeo” is the first opera in history, even though Caccini and Peri were there before him.

The Belgian ensemble Scherzi Musicali, under the direction of singer, theorbist and harpist Nicolas Achten, shows that this view is mistaken. He himself takes on the role of Orpheus and takes us on a very special nocturnal journey in a touching, semi-staged performance. Also joining him for the first time in Muri is the internationally celebrated soprano Deborah Cachet, who delights audiences and critics alike with her “very seductive, noble and tragic” timbre.
