A virtuous example of Baroque dialogue, Michelangelo Falvetti's Il Diluvio Universale transforms the Old Testament narrative into a refined allegorical representation. Based on Vincenzo Giattini's text, the action does not only involve Noah, his wife Rad, and the voice of God, but also brings in symbolic figures and the very forces of nature. Divine Justice summons the four Elements — Water, Air, Fire, and Earth — making them the executors of the punishment against corrupt humanity. The score renders the fury of the cataclysm with theatrical vigor, leading up to the appearance of Death, who celebrates her victory to the driving rhythm of a tarantella. Finally, the sign of the rainbow will restore harmony, symbolizing the reconciliation between the Creator and the cosmos. The production, conceived for the Festivalfilosofia, features the Ensemble Crescere in Musica Baroque directed by Sergio Gasparella, with the direction and baroque gesture of Alberto Allegrezza and choreography by Bernd Niedecken.
