HISTORIA DI JEPHTE
L'incontro di Carissimi e Charpentier
nella Roma del Seicento

Solos, choir and intruments by I Musici Malatestiani
Michele Pasotti direction
The concert is an artistic and spiritual encounter between two giants of the Baroque: Giacomo Carissimi, master of the Roman oratorio, and his French pupil Marc-Antoine Charpentier with their masterpieces, the Historia of Jephte and Le Reniement de Saint Pierre, which share an intense drama and a final chorus of poignant beauty. Rome, around the middle of the seventeenth century, was a fulcrum of musical innovation, with Giacomo Carissimi as one of its greatest protagonists. Marc-Antoine Charpentier studied with him, remaining deeply influenced by his style. Alongside the two oratorios, the concert also features the symphony of Lelio Colista, another protagonist of mid-century Rome and a precursor of Corelli, and Charpentier's Stabat Mater, a striking work that renounces all dramatic expressiveness to offer a contemplation of almost mantric pain.
