Haydn – The Seasons
12 April Germany / Ludwigsburg
Programme
Joseph Haydn
The Seasons Hob. XXI:3
Performers
Katharina Konradi, soprano, Patrick Grahl, tenor, Matthias Winckhler, bass, Gaechinger Cantorey, Hans-Christoph Rademann Haydn's last oratorio, a masterpiece full of colour and humour! "Every day I fell to my knees and begged God to give me the strength to complete this work successfully." The efforts of the ageing Haydn were to pay off. "The Creation" in particular made him one of the most respected composers in Europe. His last oratorio, "The Seasons", however, was not dedicated to biblical themes, but to secular ones. It oscillates between humour, natural idyll, popular and gallant styles, and echoes earlier works such as his symphony with the timpani crash. "Yippee, the wine is here" – autumn ends with a merry wine festival. Haydn concludes it intoxicatingly with what he himself called a "drunken fugue"! Contemporaries considered this work one of the most outstanding oratorios of all time. Haydn created a tone-painting masterpiece from an unpoetic text. Immerse yourself with us in rural scenes, thunderous timpani rolls and sublime soundscapes!
