“The Farinelli of the North”
Filippo Finazzi on the 250th Anniversary of His Death
He sang his way into the hearts of “the nobility as well as the most distinguished bourgeois families” at the Gänsemarkt Opera, gave music lessons, and composed: Filippo Finazzi, born in 1705 near Bergamo as the son of a lawyer, was trained in singing in Rome, Naples, and Venice. He came to Hamburg in 1744 with a traveling opera troupe.
Six symphonies and numerous previously unpublished arias and cantatas attest to the comprehensive musicality of this exceptional singer, who brought the glamour of Italian opera to Hamburg.
