02 November Germany / Hamburg

In 1614, none other than the Wolfenbüttel court conductor Michael Praetorius attested to the young Hamburg musician Johann Schop that he was ‘...a very good discant violinist’ who could ‘also perform on the lutes, trombones and cornetts’. Schop completed his apprenticeship at the court chapel in Wolfenbüttel before becoming a councillor musician in Hamburg, which he took over in 1621. Together with Heinrich Schütz, he travelled from Hamburg to Copenhagen in 1633 to work in the court chapel of the Danish King Christian IV.
The ensembles Ælbgut and Hamburger Ratsmusik are dedicating a concert at the original venue to the works of these great masters.
