Comedy ballet at Bellet Castle: George Dandin
30 July France / Saint-Aquilin
Theatrical and musical performance of Molière's comedy George Dandin ou le Mari Confondu
Relive the early days of theatre and opera in Versailles with this delightful work, reflecting the youth of the King and the captivating light-heartedness that reigned at court at the time, delightfully performed by the Marguerite Louise ensemble.
On 18 July 1668, Molière successfully performed George Dandin ou le mari confondu, a comedy mixed with a sung pastoral, for the "Grand Divertissement Royal de Versailles" offered by Louis XIV to his court to celebrate the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. This humorous story of a rich peasant who buys a young noblewoman is interspersed with interludes set to Lully's splendid music. This work, symbolic of the creative vigour of the early days of Versailles and the artistic appetite of a thirty-year-old sovereign, is brought back to life by Gaétan Jarry and Marguerite Louise with incomparable flavour: tambourines, flutes and musettes add to the festivities and trumpets proclaim the glory of Louis. Here is the marvellous echo of the sumptuous celebrations held at Versailles by Louis XIV!
Ensemble Marguerite Louise, Gaétan Jarry, conductor
Stage direction: Xavier Roux
Production by the Atelier Théâtre d'Itinéraire Baroque
