Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht 2025 - Museumkunst?
Netherlands / Utrecht
Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht 2025 - Museumkunst? takes place from August 29 - September 7
Is early music Museumkunst? Of course, the answer is yes! Museumkunst refers to cultural expressions that have entered the canon. But the term is sometimes used mockingly, referring to outdated art that, while it may be conserved, has in fact lost its relevance in contemporary society. Much of the art music of past centuries was functional music: religious, political. Today, little remains of that original function. As a festival, we do much the same as museums: we detach cultural expressions from their original environment and place them in a new context, with a new purpose: to let people experience beauty. But can we truly do this without consequence?
With artists in residence La Fonte Musica, Stile Antico and Jean Rondeau, and co-curator Museum Catharijneconvent, we attempt to answer the central question of this festival edition: how do we keep musical heritage alive for people today?
As always, this search goes hand in hand with the very best Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music from the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht both in person and with online live streams via Early Music Television (EMTV)!
