During Advent, we kindle a special musical light: the programme features his Christmas cantatas – music brimming with imagery that touches the heart instantly, even without prior knowledge. Festive jubilation with trumpets and timpani, as in the opening chorus of the Christmas Oratorio, blends with contemplative, heartfelt moments in delicate arias and duets. Brief introductions provide background to the works and reveal how Bach uses sound to convey emotions, scenes and characters.
