The melody of Iudicii signum, inherited from the Cantigas de Santa Marรญa by Alfonso X the Wise, is a composition put into the mouth of the sibyl Eritrea, which used to be sung at the end of the last lesson of Christmas Matins until it was suppressed as a result of the liturgical reforms that emerged from the Council of Trent. Widely disseminated throughout Western Europe for its eschatological message, its first adaptation into the Romance language corresponds to one of the Cantigas, โ€˜Madre de Deusโ€™ (CSM 422), which was followed a century later by other adaptations in Valencian and Castilian. Popularly known as the Song of the Sibyl, later versions incorporate verses alluding to the Virgin Mary, whose intervention implores the Last Judgement.
