The traditional superstition that hunchbacks or deformed people bring good luck is clearly reflected in the fact that Queen Germana de Foix’s jester was one, and that in European courts, the hump was an object of both hilarity and protection. Canon Ester is a character in El Cortesano by Luis Milà—hunchbacked, comic, and enjoying the freedoms of a jester, like the permissive characters from Greek tales or Pulcinella in Italy... The Queen’s Jester is a critically and satirically styled performance combining text, Renaissance music, and contemporary dance.
Toni Aparisi, jester
Carles Magraner, viols
Robert Cases, lute
