The ballet music from Mozart's «Idomeneo» and Haydn's cantata «Arianna a Naxos», arranged for large orchestra by his pupil Sigismund Neukomm, bring immortal mythological themes to life. As if Beethoven's Second Symphony also gave insight into Midas, an early reviewer described it as «a crass ogre, a stabbed, unbound writhing dragon that refuses to die, and although bleeding in the Finale, angrily beats about with tail erect».
