Christmas concert, Missa Concertata
12 December/07h30 France / Saint Donat sur l'Herbasse
In the 18th century, the Advent season inspired the composition of festive choral works.
In Leipzig, Bach composed cantatas and oratorios for this important time in the liturgical calendar. This may also have been the case with his four short masses, whose exact purpose remains unknown.nnWith its pastoral character and rich orchestration, in which the horns and oboes stand out.
The Missa Brevis infa major beautifully evokes the atmosphere of Christmas.
Pergolesi’s Missa Concertata features similar orchestration and is written in the same key.
A virtuosic, concertante work for double choir and double orchestra, it is thought to have been composed shortly after the 1732 earthquake in Naples, to celebrate the return of more peaceful times.
A rare work to be discovered through an unpublished manuscript preserved at the Lyon Municipal Library.
A world premiere!
