Brussels in the Age of Enlightenment
29 October Belgium / Brussels
On October 29, 2026, Les Muffatti take the stage at the legendary Bozar Hall with a brand new programme, in collaboration with harpsichordist Anthony Romaniuk.
They travel to 18th-century Brussels under Charles of Lorraine (1744-1780). At that time, the capital of the Austrian Netherlands is experiencing a period of genuine cultural ferment.
In 1754, inspired by Paris’s celebrated Concert Spirituel, the Concert bourgeois is founded under the direction of violinist Pierre Van Maldere. The concept? Circumventing the Théâtre de la Monnaie’s monopoly by offering instrumental works and sacred music to a subscriber audience. The symphony is emerging, new works are specially commissioned. For the musicians, it’s a small revolution: they emancipate themselves from their status as servants to become true artists.
This programme captures this fascinating transitional era: from the late Baroque to the emerging Classical style, passing through Sturm und Drang. Alongside works from Paris (Stamitz) and Vienna (Haydn), Les Muffatti shine a spotlight on Brussels composers, with the world premieres of works by Pieter Van Maldere and Ignaz Vitzthumb.
A concert celebrating Brussels’ rich musical heritage and the 30 years of the ensemble in one of Belgium’s most prestigious venues.
