A masterpiece of the highest order
Beethoven described his Missa Solemnis as his ‘greatest work’, for it transcended all boundaries. It was premiered in a concert hall in 1823 – shortly before his Ninth Symphony. This incomparable music, which demands the highest standards of interpretation, left the audience both overwhelmed and bewildered. Following a period of very intensive preparation, Beethoven created, with this Mass, his most personal exploration of his faith. In doing so, he translated an understanding of God shaped by the Enlightenment and humanism into music. He delved deeply into the meaning of the text in order to reflect his own world consistently and ‘from the heart’. This historically informed performance and recording marks a new milestone in the history of the Gaechinger Cantorey!
