Barokkanerne (Norwegian Baroque Ensemble): Händels Messias

From 16 December to 16 December
From 17 December to 17 December Norway / Oslo, Norway

An oratorio that never loses its power—and perhaps the ultimate Christmas music! When baroque specialist Alfredo Bernardini leads Barokkanerne, text, harmony, and melody gain new depth: striking contrasts, dancing rhythms, and sheer, overflowing joy. He is joined by soloists Mari Aschehoug (soprano), Maria Dale Johannessen (alto), Nicholas Mulroy (tenor), and Yannick Debus (bass), together with the YMIR Chamber Choir. On Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 December, they will fill the University Aula with Handel’s timeless sounds.

Written in just three intense weeks in 1741, Messiah was first performed in Dublin in 1742 for a charitable cause. The concert was so sought after that the ladies were asked to leave their voluminous hoop skirts at home so more people could fit into the hall! The success was overwhelming. Soon after, the work became an annual tradition in London—beginning its journey toward becoming one of the greatest institutions in music history.

There is no such thing as a “definitive” version of Messiah. Handel himself frequently altered arias and choruses, adapting them to singers and circumstances. That means every performance carries its own unique choices and interpretations—just as it will in the Aula this December.

Welcome to a festive tradition with Barokkanerne’s unmistakable touch!
