Ann Ford was a meteorite in the musical history of 18th-century England. Born into a wealthy but non-musical family, she received a thorough musical education that inspired her to want to make a living from music, organising private and then public concerts. She aspired to lead the life of a professional musician, rather than making it her hobby, as was the norm. This path was not without its difficulties: scandal loomed, and fierce competition from other women eager to gain fame and glory on stage was not long in coming.
