The troubadours were poet-musicians whose poetic and musical activity flourished mainly in the courts of Western Europe, especially in 12th- and 13th-century France, as well as in the former Crown of Aragon.

With the troubadours, music and poetry were united in the service of the ideal of courtly love. Love and heartbreak were the central themes of troubadour poetry, and the need to express these emotions musically led to the creation of various genres such as the canso, pastorela, and alba.
