A chest of viols – a chest full of violas da gamba of all sizes – was part of the basic equipment of every good house during the golden age of the English monarchs Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I.
During these three generations, a musical culture developed that was distinctly different from that on the continent. It displays a refinement and depth that is unparalleled; the English loved the delicate and subtle sound of the viola da gamba. This gave rise to a large amount of wonderful chamber music for several violas da gamba playing together in a consort. In this concert of soft tones, we present works by Henry Purcell, Anthony Holborne, John Dowland and Johann Sebastian Bach.
