The Roman de Fauvel is a fourteenth-century allegorical satire against corruption, composed in verse and enriched with music and miniatures. The story revolves around Fauvel, a horse that symbolizes the vices of French society. Fauvel tries to marry Fortuna to stop his wheel, but is rejected and instead marries Vanagloria. The manuscript Fr. 146, held at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, includes 167 musical compositions that illustrate the musical landscape of the time, integrating ancient genres and new stylistic elements of the ars nova.
