Gibbons 400 Weekend
From 07 March 2025 to 09 March 2025/ United Kingdom / Oxford
Presenting three concerts at St John's College Chapel, Oxford, Chelys Consort of Viols delve into the wonderfully diverse instrumental and vocal music of composer Orlando Gibbons, who died 400 years ago in 1625. From intricate two-part gems, to sumptuous 6-part fantasias, via the trios and quartets including the ‘great dooble bass’, and the mesmerising in nomines. Gibbons crafted some of the best consort music in existence, so what better way to mark the occasion than by enjoying all of it?
Chelys are joined by St John’s Choir Director David Bannister on keyboard and for the Sunday concert 'Dainty Fine Bird' by soprano Emily Atkinson. This 3-day festival commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death of Orlando Gibbons in 1625 is supported by a grant from Continuo Foundation.
