SACRA SERENISSIMA
Musica a San Marco nella Venezia del ‘600: C. Monteverdi, A. Grandi, F. Cavalli
Voices and instruments of I Musici Malatestiani
Michele Pasotti Direction
The title is based on Simone Weil’s "Venice Saves", an unfinished tragedy set in 1618, in which Monteverdi’s music resounds when a mad project of destruction of Venice is foiled. Beauty saved, then. The music presented are by Monteverdi, Cavalli, Legrenzi, Grandi and Castello: the first three were masters of the chapel at San Marco and have written some of the most beautiful sacred compositions of the seventeenth century; Grandi and Castello have played important roles in the ducal city. The repertoire represents and recapitulates the great Venetian school with unique practices and style, very imitated in which voices and instruments dialogue and concert.
