Riposta - The Mercenaries' Guild

This programme takes us to Venice, a Republic that at the very beginning of the 17th century was determined to preserve its freedom, including its musical freedom. It is largely composed of secular and sacred works by Claudio Monteverdi, choirmaster of Saint Mark's Basilica, who broke with the tradition of polyphony. In this 'New Practice', the instruments become independent of the voice, and the latter is enhanced by the writing of a melody accompanied by a continuo. Soprano Violaine Le Chenadec will dialogue with Adrien Mabire's cornet for this musical riposte.
