“Resurrexi, et adhuc tecum sum”: Heinrich Isaac’s Missa Paschalis ‘ad organum’
24 August 2024/20h00/ Belgium / Antwerp, St.-Pauluskerk
“I arose, and am still with Thee” begins the introit for Easter Sunday, announcing the most joyful moment in the Christian calendar. Heinrich Isaac’s ecstatic Missa Paschale certainly rises to the occasion, combining the supple elegance of his melodic writing with the splendour of the Renaissance organ. Appointed to the lofty position of composer at the imperial court of Maximilian I, Isaac’s stellar career brought him into contact with some of the greatest virtuosi of the day, including the great organist Paul Holfhaimer. It was perhaps this very relationship which inspired the creation of his famous missa ad organum, drawing upon improvised practices of alternatim performance to create a rich and sumptuous soundworld.
In this collaborative program, the award-winning Dutch ensemble Cappella Pratensis appears with organist Wim Diepenhorst to evoke the splendour of such an occasion, with both organ and vocal improvisations being interweaved with Isaac’s own masterful counterpoint. The programme is performed directly from historical notation, as is typical of Cappella Pratensis’ practice, an inherently immersive approach which provides the foundation of Cappella Pratensis’ distinctive sound.
Performers: Cappella Pratensis + Wim Diepenhorst (Organ and Apfelregal)
