In 17th-century England, opera didn't have an easy time facing the theater. There was no operatic tradition of its own as in France or Italy, but "semi-opera", a particular form of English Baroque opera, was developing. In Matthew Locke's "Psyche", song and dance alternate with short recitatives and instrumental pieces. Being a true artistic firework display, this work rivals the splendor of continental operas.
