LES FOLIES FRANÇOISES AND THE ENSEMBLE VARIATIONS
Patrick Cohën-Akenine: violin
Benjamin Chenier: violin
André Henrich: theorbo
François Poly: cello
Frédéric Desenclos: organ
Composed by Buxtehude in 1680 and dedicated to Gustaf Düben, Kapellmeister to the King of Sweden, this cycle of seven cantatas laments each of the seven wounds of Christ. The work was inspired by a medieval collection of spiritual poetry. Buxtehude retained only extracts and introduced them with a biblical quotation referring to the part of the body concerned.
Arias and spiritual concertos, counterpoints and vocalises, impatient pain and intolerable languor, all intermingle throughout the programme.
Cor, cor meum'' murmurs the chorus, the final sigh a moving confession of its distress.
Sunday 24 March 2024 - 6pm
Amilly - Église Saint-Martin
