Academy - Initiation to Gregorian chant

Gregorian chant was a complex and learned ornamented chant, requiring a new type of listening, where modal accuracy, prosodic rhythm and vocal dynamics combine in a living vocal gesture. Students in the introductory course will have a concrete experience of this art of medieval cantors. The pieces in the repertoire will introduce them to this vocal gesture as suggested in the first Gregorian manuscripts, and as still practiced in the oral traditions of other cultures (as proposed in the following CIMM course on the Carnatic music of the South India).
