Goldberg Variations

Originally composed for harpsichord, the Goldberg Variations are also frequently performed on the piano; on this occasion we will hear them in a version for string trio by Annette Bartholdy. According to Bach's biography, the Russian ambassador to Saxony, Count Kaiserling, suffered from insomnia and hired Goldberg, a pupil of Bach's, to play from the antechamber to help him sleep. As the ambassador requested Bach to write music for this Goldberg service, Bach composed an aria with 30 variations, at the end of which the initial aria is repeated.
